Reflective film is a simple but effective way to improve underfloor heating efficiency, yet many homeowners and installers overlook its benefits. By reflecting radiant heat back into the room, it reduces energy waste and improves comfort. This guide explains how reflective film works and why it is worth installing.
Underfloor heating pipes radiate heat in all directions. Without a reflective layer, much of this heat travels downward into the subfloor and is lost. Reflective film is placed beneath the pipes, with a polished aluminum surface facing upward. This surface reflects radiant heat back into the room, ensuring that more of the heat produced stays where it is needed. The result is a more efficient system that reaches comfortable temperatures faster.
Faster warm-up: More heat stays in the room, reducing warm-up time.
Lower energy use: Reduced heat loss means the system runs more efficiently.
Even heat distribution: Reflective surfaces help spread heat uniformly across the floor.
Vapor barrier: Many films also act as a moisture barrier, protecting the subfloor.
Easy installation: Rolls can be cut and laid quickly with basic tools.
Lay the film across a clean, level subfloor with the reflective side facing up. Overlap joints by at least 10 centimeters and seal them with aluminum foil tape. Pay special attention to edges and corners, where gaps can reduce the film's effectiveness. Once the film is sealed, pipes or insulation boards can be installed on top as normal.
Look for a film with a high reflectivity rating, a durable backing, and a width that minimizes joints. For ground floors or spaces over unheated areas, choose a film with a built-in vapor barrier. Always check that the film is compatible with your chosen insulation and pipe system before installation.
Reflective film is a small investment that delivers significant returns in comfort and efficiency. By reflecting heat back into the room, it helps any underfloor heating system perform at its best.
