Underfloor heating clips are the unsung heroes of any radiant heating installation. While they may seem like a small detail, the clips you choose can significantly affect the speed, reliability, and long-term performance of the entire system. This guide explains why clips matter and what to look for.
Underfloor heating clips are U-shaped or snap-fit plastic fasteners that secure heating pipes to fixing rails, mesh, or insulation. They are designed to hold the pipe at the correct center-to-center spacing while allowing it to expand and contract with temperature changes. Most clips are made from durable engineering plastic that will not scratch the pipe and is resistant to corrosion in the screed environment.
If pipes shift during screed pouring, the designed heat distribution is compromised. Clips ensure that every pipe loop stays exactly where the system designer intended, delivering consistent warmth across the room. Good clips also make installation faster: snap-fit designs can be applied in seconds, reducing labor time on large projects.
Pipe compatibility: Ensure the clip fits your pipe diameter, commonly 16 mm or 20 mm.
Material quality: High-grade polypropylene offers the best balance of flexibility and strength.
Fixing system: Choose clips that work with your rails, mesh, or insulation boards.
Speed of installation: Snap-on clips save significant time compared with tied or stapled options.
Corrosion resistance: Plastic clips will not rust or stain the finished floor.
Apply clips at regular intervals along the pipe run, following the manufacturer's recommendations. Extra clips should be used around bends, near the manifold, and wherever the pipe changes direction. Once the pipe network is complete, pressure-test the system before pouring screed to ensure no connections have loosened.
Underfloor heating clips may be a small component, but their impact on installation speed and system performance is significant. Choosing the right clips ensures a secure, efficient, and long-lasting underfloor heating system.
